Character Representations in Scream

The first character to be shown in Scream is Casey Becker played by Drew Barrymore. She is the scream queen in the film which is represented by her being a blonde, attractive middle-class teenager left alone at home alone. Although she was one of the most known actors in the film, she was killed off very quickly. This makes the viewer think that anything could happen in the film if they are killing off one of the most well known actors almost straight away.

Casey's parents dont show up until just after shes been killed. This represents that authority figures are useless. This is also shown throughout the film by other authority figures such as the police, who fail to find the killers, and Gale Weathers who is a news reporter who constantly gets involved in the murders and harasses the surving victims.

The final girl is Sidney Prescott played by Neve Campbell. She is represented by a mature, intelligent teenager. She managed to escape from and kill her Ghostface killers and usually made the right decisions.

The killers in Scream wore the same outfit and were called Ghostface. Ghostface is represented by characters who get quite close to Sidney because they want secretly want revenge on her.

  1. interesting points, tho' mainly focussed on narrative
think about how clothing/hair/makeup etc contain symbolic meaning (signifiers) which communicate to the audience
think about how the scream queen v final girl binary opposition is built up and signified by such means
